  2. Meet Richard I of England, also known as Richard the Lionheart, was a formidable leader and warrior. Born on September 8, 1157, he ascended to the English throne in 1189 and ruled until his death in 1199. His reign extended beyond England; he held titles such as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine, and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, and Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes. Richard hailed from the House of Plantagenet, a powerful dynasty.

Key Facts about Richard the Lionheart:

    • Brave Warrior: His epithet, Lionheart, reflects his reputation as a courageous and skilled military leader.
    • Third Crusade: Richard played a crucial role in the Third Crusade, leading Christian forces against the formidable Muslim leader Saladin. Although he didn’t recapture Jerusalem, he secured several victories.
    • Imprisonment in Dürnstein Castle: On his return from the Crusade, Richard was captured near Vienna by Duke Leopold V of Austria. He spent two years (from December 1192 to March 1193) imprisoned in Dürnstein Castle, perched strategically above the Danube River.
    • Legacy: Richard’s reign was marked by his absence from England; he spent most of his time on Crusade or defending his French territories. Despite this, he remains an iconic figure in both England and France.

Dürnstein Castle—a medieval rock fortress—holds a place in history as the site of Richard’s captivity. Its ruins stand proudly in the Lower Austrian Wachau region, overlooking the Danube River. The castle, built around 1130, witnessed both triumphs and turmoil, including the Hussite plundering in the 15th century and its eventual abandonment. Today, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Wachau Cultural Landscape.

When you visit Dürnstein, you’ll stand where legends unfolded—a testament to the enduring legacy of Richard the Lionheart
